IKONA Wildlife Management Area

TOURISM

The migration passes through village land.

More than a million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra cross Ikona each year. Camps inside the WMA turn that movement into revenue for the villages.

Ikona sits on the direct route of the Great Migration. The annual movement of wildebeest and zebra is the foundation of the tourism economy inside the WMA, and tourism contributes about 38% of gross income in the area.

The association has built a camp at Fort Ikoma and works with investors who operate lodges and tented camps inside the WMA. The revenue is shared with the member villages.

Investors who share the land.

The WMA works with safari operators, lodge companies and camp owners. Each partnership is an agreement with the association and the member villages.
